Precision air conditioning for server rooms

Precision air conditioning is a cooling system for server rooms and technical rooms that keeps temperature and humidity stable all year round, usually 18-27 °C at the server air inlet as recommended by ASHRAE. ColdBack selects, installs and services precision air conditioning and cooling cabinets with redundancy and alarms throughout Masovia (Mazowieckie Province). We work with equipment from STULZ, Emerson and Mitsubishi, among others.

Scope

Cooling that cannot stop

A server room generates heat around the clock, in winter too. A standard air conditioner is not built for this, so we select units for continuous operation and always with spare capacity.

  • Cooling capacity sizing

Almost all the energy drawn by IT equipment turns into heat. We calculate capacity from power draw, UPS and a margin for expansion.

  • Precision air conditioning cabinets

Floor-standing units with temperature and humidity control for medium and large server rooms, including STULZ, Emerson and Mitsubishi.

  • Air conditioning for small server rooms

Units designed to run all year round, including in sub-zero outdoor temperatures.

  • N+1 redundancy

Two or more units with automatic changeover and duty rotation. If one fails, cooling does not stop.

  • Alarms and monitoring

Temperature and humidity sensors, with an alarm when limits are exceeded or a unit fails.

  • Service and contract

Maintenance inspections on fixed dates and a service contract with 24/7 on-call service.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is precision air conditioning different from standard air conditioning?

Precision air conditioning runs around the clock all year, including in sub-zero outdoor temperatures, holds temperature to within a few degrees and controls humidity. It is also designed for heat given off by equipment rather than by people and sunlight. A standard comfort air conditioner is not built for continuous operation and wears out faster.

What temperature should a server room be?

ASHRAE, the organisation that sets standards for server rooms, recommends a server inlet air temperature of 18 to 27 °C. We keep humidity at a level that avoids condensation and static charge. Stable temperature matters more than low temperature.

How do you size air conditioning for a server room?

The starting point is the power draw of the IT equipment, because almost all of that energy turns into heat. On top of that come UPS losses, lighting, people and heat from the surroundings. We add a margin for expansion and select units so that one can take over from another.

What is N+1 redundancy?

It is a setup with one more unit than is needed to cover the full load. When one unit fails or is being serviced, the others keep cooling the server room. The controller switches units automatically and rotates their duty so they wear evenly.

Can you respond to a breakdown at night?

Clients with a service contract get 24/7 on-call service, including weekends and public holidays. For server rooms we always recommend a contract, because the time it takes servers to start shutting down after cooling stops is usually short.

Which equipment do you work with?

We install and service precision air conditioning from STULZ, Emerson and Mitsubishi, among others. We select units to match the load, the size of the server room and the redundancy required, and we also service systems installed by other companies.
