Refrigeration system upgrades
Upgrading a refrigeration system means replacing worn or inefficient parts of the system, such as condensing units, refrigerant, controls and compressor control, while keeping the infrastructure that still works. ColdBack upgrades systems in shops, plants and warehouses, switching to refrigerants permitted under F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, including CO₂, and cutting power consumption.
- F-gascompliance with 2024/573
- CO₂refrigerant with GWP 1
- inverterslower power consumption
- 300+projects since 2021

What we upgrade
An upgrade starts with an inspection of the system. We tell you what is worth replacing now, what can wait and what is not worth touching.
Refrigerant replacement
Switching from HFC refrigerants being phased out to low-GWP refrigerants or CO₂, in line with F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573.
New condensing units
Replacing old condensing units with new, more efficient ones, often on the existing pipework.
Inverters and compressor control
Smooth capacity control instead of constant switching on and off. Less power and fewer breakdowns.
Controls and electronic valves
New controllers and electronic expansion valves that make better use of the evaporators.
Heat recovery
Heat from condensing used to heat water or rooms, especially in CO₂ systems.
Leaks and documentation
Fixing leaks, F-gas leak checks, updating the CRO entry.
Refrigerant comparison
CO₂ or HFC: refrigerant comparison
GWP is the global warming potential (CO₂ = 1). The higher it is, the stricter the limits under the F-gas Regulation 2024/573. Class A1 means a non-flammable refrigerant with low toxicity, A3 a flammable one.
| Refrigerant | GWP | Class | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| R744 (CO₂) | 1 | A1 | Natural refrigerant. High pressures, transcritical systems, heat recovery. No F-gas restrictions. |
| R404A | 3922 | A1 | Classic HFC in commercial refrigeration, being phased out by the F-gas Regulation. |
| R448A / R449A | approx. 1400 | A1 | Transitional replacements for R404A, still subject to restrictions. |
| R290 (propane) | 3 | A3 | Natural and efficient but flammable: only small charges, e.g. in plug-in equipment. |

Service area
We work in Warsaw and Masovia from our base in Majdan near Warsaw. For larger sites, such as large-format stores, we also work in other parts of Poland.
Frequently asked questions
24/7 on-call service
Night, weekend and public holiday on-call service is available to companies with a service contract, and in Warsaw also a guaranteed response within 4 hours. Without a contract we take calls Mon-Fri 8:00-18:00.
Want to be sure a Saturday breakdown will not spoil your stock? Call 516 338 012 and we will match the inspection scope and response time to your cold room.
When is it worth upgrading a refrigeration system?
When the system runs on an HFC refrigerant being phased out under the F-gas Regulation, when breakdowns keep recurring, when electricity bills are rising or when the site is expanding. Replacing condensing units and controls often gives more than building a new system from scratch, because the pipework and evaporators can stay.
What does F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 mean for my system?
The regulation gradually restricts high-GWP refrigerants. Their availability is falling and prices are rising, so servicing old systems is getting more and more expensive. Upgrading to a low-GWP refrigerant or CO₂ solves this problem for years. The regulation also requires regular leak checks, which we carry out with an entry in the CRO.
Can a system be upgraded without closing the shop?
Yes. We split the work into stages and switch the cooling points over one by one, and we schedule the noisiest work outside opening hours. This is how we upgraded the system in a hypermarket that stayed open, with condensing units installed on the roof.
How much does a refrigeration system upgrade cost?
It depends on the scope: replacing the controls alone costs something different from new condensing units and a refrigerant change. After inspecting the system we prepare a plan with the order of work and a quote within 48 hours.
Will an upgrade lower my electricity bills?
Usually yes, because new compressors, inverters and electronic expansion valves work more efficiently than equipment that is ten or more years old, and heat recovery makes use of energy that is currently released into the air. We assess the scale of savings after inspecting the system.
